TYPOLOGIES
FALL 2017
USC, James Diawald
This mat field typology design derived from my analysis on redefining the functions of a wall and its continuity.
This project develops space and objects through a postmodern and abstract spline geometry that is inspired by Memphis art. The scale of the figures dispersed in the field allows for adaptation to program in a variety of ways, some being occupiable rooms and others being counters with embedded functions.
The primary and private functions of the units are on the ground floor while the second floor is the public amenities that can be accessed externally without disrupting the unit privacy. Conventional methods of the demising wall are challenged through an all encompassing envelope and ambiguity of definitive space. Spatial divisions are created through verticality and vegetation.
My design of a portable living object, the "house guest", contributed to this exploration of the spline due to the discovered curves in relation to the human body while performing daily rituals within an independently functioning object.
