"THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG":
SCULPTURAL INTEGRITY
FALL 2016
USC, Victor Jones
This single family housing project located on an intersection in Santa Monica, CA, transforms an abstracted industrial form, "figure in a field", into a livable environment that fits into the site context.
Building upon my feral figure transformation, I created a house design focused on directionality. The forms are intended to guide the person's views and pathways. Using the objects developed previously, I created a hierarchy of occupiable space in which function is applied to the form to maintain the geometric sculptural qualities.
The iceberg design suggests a change in direction through all axes due to the varying scales of rooms that lie above and or below the ground. The main entrance and transitional area in the center leads to the continuously connected and private primary spaces below ground that need to be easily accessible for a user always in a hurry. While the smaller, isolated rooms above the ground are intended for more leisurely time to experience the natural elements.
