PROJECT DESCRIPTION
DIPTYCH DRAWING
SPRING 2017
This project analyzes Sou Fujitmoto’s "House N" as a steretonic, tectonic, and monocoque shell through modeling techniques.
1. The stereotonic model interprets the positive and negative space of "House N". By extruding the windows from each shell to the walls of each interior shell, the apertures in the house are
exaggerated and the in-between space becomes the positive mass of the cast. Color is used to emphasize transparency and distinguish the density of each shell through the use of gradient.
2. The tectonic version focuses on the form that the extruded intersections from the cast created. The tectonic model is an inverted version of the cast: the tectonics expose the worm that squiggles through the casted wormholes. The model defines the negative space from part 1 and blurs the lines between defining what is considered positive and negative mass by using color in a specific way that causes a lack of clear boundaries between forms. This correlates to Sou Fujimoto’s original idea of drawing no distinct boundaries between interior and exterior and simply expressing the spaces in between.
Maintaining the same color scheme throughout the project shows the gradual transformation of the form. The dark pink of the tectonic analysis emphasizes the points of intersection while green and blue are used for the support structure. Introducing different colors for the support clarifies the contrast. A change in material is also used to soften the rigidity of the structural analysis with an aspect of ambiguity.
3. Since House N’s form could be read as a monocoque shell, Part 3 displays the house built as a continuous folded surface that plays with different visual effects created by the perforated sheets.
